The wildebeest migration is a continuous loop rather than a single event, so there is no closed season. What changes month to month is which part of the Serengeti ecosystem holds the herds.
December to March — calving season on the short-grass plains in the south. Hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few weeks, and predator activity is at its highest.
April to June — the herds move north-west through the central Serengeti. Fewer vehicles, green landscapes and lower rates.
July to October — the Grumeti and Mara river crossings. This is the classic image most travellers have in mind, and the busiest period.
